Tips To Gear Up For Pet Travel

Bringing your four-legged friend on your next autumn escape?

Gear up for road trips with your furry companions. Whether you're heading to a cozy cabin in the woods or embarking on a scenic drive to admire the fall foliage, having the right accessories can make your journey safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

Safety First

Foremost, consider the safety of your pet and passengers in the car. The ASPCA lists several pet accessories that help with travel safety.

  • Crash-Tested Car Harness. ASPCA recommends using a crash-tested car harness to keep pets secure during sudden stops or accidents. Look for one that's been rigorously tested and is easy to use.  The organization also asks drivers to help prevent serious pet injuries by preventing them from riding with their head out the window.
  • An LED collar or harness. An LED collar or harness attachment ensures your pet can be seen during early autumn morning or evening walks.
  • A backseat barrier. Keep your pet safely in the back seat with a sturdy barrier. This prevents distractions while driving and keeps everyone safer.

Autumn Weather

Because unpredictable weather is possible during a fall road trip, bringing items that will keep your pet warm and comfortable is important as well. Cesar Millan, known as the “Dog whisperer,” suggests packing the following items for your pet:

  • An insulated pet coat just in case it gets cold or rains, an insulated, waterproof coat will keep your pet warm and dry during chilly outdoor explorations.
  • Pet shoes are not just a cute accessory. They are important if you live or are traveling to an area with colder temperatures or a lot of precipitation. Shoes can help protect their paws against frostbite as well as the salt and chemicals used for de-icing roads and sidewalks.
  • Paw balm as an alternative to pet shoes. The moisturizing ointment protects your pet's paw pads from rough terrain and cold surfaces. It's also great for soothing cracked pads after a long hike.
  • Low-profile pet bed If you plan to take your dog camping or with you to a restaurant. A flat travel pad will provide an extra layer of comfort for your pet. The low profile is less obtrusive in areas with other people. It also provides insulation from the cold ground.
  • Anxiety vest to help keep pets calm while on the road trip. It also helps reduce the effect of stress triggers like travel, loud noises, and the general unease of being away from home.
  • Dog pack to hold all essential items like dog toys, food, and water. The pack is not a way to offload pet items from your pack to theirs. It gives your dog “mental stimulation” and helps discipline their minds, according to Millan.

Add a pet-friendly travel kit to your list of important take-alongs. The ASPCA suggests packing it with items like food, a bowl, leash, a waste scoop, plastic bags, grooming supplies, medication and first-aid, and any travel documents.
