Toyota engineers have made a good thing even better with advanced technologies and rugged capabilities in the 2022 Toyota Tundra.
“Our design goal from the beginning was to create the most powerful, rugged and sophisticated looking full-size pickup that will take Tundra to a whole new level,“ said Kevin Hunter, president of Calty Design Research.
Under the Hood
Toyota’s 2022 Tundra offers two new powertrains: V6 twin-turbo and hybrid twin-turbo engines. Both engines are mated with a 10-speed Electronically Controlled Automatic Transmission with Intelligence.
While the non-hybrid engine churns out 348 hp and 405 Ib-feet-of-torque, the hybrid electrical motor generates a combined 437 hp and 538 Ib-feet-of-torque.
The motor uses a 288V sealed Nickel-metal Hydride (Ni-MH) battery with a newly formulated power control unit that guarantees battery durability and thermal drive performance.
Tundra’s maximum towing capacity of 12,000-pounds and offers with a slew of features that makes trailering a less daunting task. The standard Tow/Haul modes are for transporting small box trailers and boats. A “Tow/Haul+” mode comes with a more aggressive throttle response used for towing larger trailers like RVs and bigger boats.
Comfort & Convenience
The 2022 Tundra is Toyota’s first vehicle to include the all-new Audio Multimedia system that delivers improved interaction with touch, sight and voice activation. It features a centrally located 14-inch screen with high-quality visuals and responsive touch functionality similar to the pinch and zoom functions on iPhones and tablets.
A cloud-based native navigation system allows front passengers to use voice-activated commands to search for directions, find points of interests, explore local businesses and adjust audio controls.
The new system also uses a large easy-to-grip dial for audio volume and offers standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
The navigation system is complemented with safety and driver-assistance features which include: automatic high-beams, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
For trailering travelers, a Panoramic View Monitor allows cameras to display a top-down view of the truck’s rear end for additional visibility. LED lights controlled via a button inside the cabin projects light towards the trailer during nighttime or low-visibility situations.
Trailer Back Guidance helps with maneuvering, while the Straight Path Assist feature is designed to ensure truck and trailer back up in a straight line. A new air suspension system makes towing a simpler proposition by offering load-level ability and a right balance between truck and trailer.
“We took a fresh, transformational approach to our truck development and had to rethink many things we’d previously done,” said Mike Sweers, Senior Vice President, Product Development Office.
“Not only did we improve the performance and enhance the capability of this new Tundra, at the same time, we were certain to retain the strong quality, durability and reliability for which Toyota trucks are known,” he added.
