Venza Hybrid Crossover Blends Technology, Fuel Efficiency

After a 6-year hiatus, Toyota’s Venza returns with a fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain, an improved upscale design and leading-edge SUV technology.

Under the Hood

Standard on the 2022 Venza is a 2.5-liter 4–cylinder engine mated to 3 electric motors that generate 219 hp and 163 Lb-ft of torque.

Power from the electric motors is distributed evenly to all 4 wheels and matched to an electronically controlled variable (ECVT) transmission in sequential mode shift.

One motor powers the rear wheels, while the other 2 motors work in tandem to spin the fronts.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the 2022 Venza drives an estimated 40 MPG in the city and 37 MPG on the highway, a good fuel economy choice for individuals living in dense city areas or commuters plying long stretches of expressway.

Comfort and Convenience

The Toyota Venza is a two-row SUV decked in a spacious interior and seats 5 passengers comfortably.

Front seats are well-contoured and provide an 8-way power adjustment system for drivers to find a variety of suitable driving positions, while 37.8 inches (0.96 m) of legroom allow a rear-seat passenger to feel at ease.

A 12.3-inch touchscreen display provides easy access to a 9-speaker premium audio system. The touchscreen display is complemented by a 10-inch color Heads Up system and 7-inch multi-information interface which provides drivers with essential data like speed, hybrid system stats and safety information in real-time.

Cargo space behind the rear seats is 28.8 cubic feet (0.82 m³). It can be bumped to 33.1 cubic feet (0.94 m³) with rear seats folded flat; plenty of room for carry-on bags, a big haul of groceries, big boxes from a hardware store and the occasional oddly-shaped consignment.

An acoustic glass windshield blocks out wind noise when traveling at high speeds, while a slick panoramic sunroof offers a convertible-style experience by providing a bigger view of the overhead sky.

Additionally, the electrochromic glass technology lets drivers use the sunroof in two modes, by allowing them to switch from clear to frosted glass so sunlight is redirected from the vehicle. This feature blots out ultraviolet rays and makes it easier for kids in the back to take naps despite soaring temperatures.

Safety

Toyota Safety Sense offers expansive features for assisted driving and safety systems and is standard on the 2022 Venza.

Some features of the technologies include:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Road Sign Assist
  • Automatic High Beams

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the 2022 Venza an overall rating of 5 out of 5 stars in side crash tests and 4 stars in frontal crash and rollover tests.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), which uses a different scale for grading collision avoidance situations, awarded the Venza a “Superior” rating in standard front crash prevention systems.
