The 2022 Toyota Tundra has earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
With significant improvements in front crash tests and headlight appraisals, Tundra is the first truck of any size to be given the highest-ranking accolade this year.
The pickup truck scored top marks in all six crashworthiness evaluations: driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, original side, roof strength and head restraint tests.
It also achieved a "superior" rating for its front crash prevention system in vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian collisions.
Tundra safety features
Features include forward collision warning, which scans the road ahead for drivers and automatic emergency braking. The safety system which identifies a possible collision and responds by autonomously activating the brakes to slow a vehicle prior to impact or bring it to a stop.
The Toyota Tundra is also the only pickup truck with the highest rating of "good" for the IIHS seat belt reminder test. An audible signal on the dashboard display and center console helps detect an unbelted occupant in the driver or passenger seat. It also reveals when a second-row belt that was previously unbuckled is unfastened.
To earn a Top Safety Pick+ award, a vehicle must achieve "good" scores in all crash evaluations.
Other requirements include an "advanced" or "superior" rating in front crash prevention systems and a "good" or "acceptable" score in headlight appraisals. The "good" or "acceptable" headlights score must be a standard feature.
