Toyota’s 2023 4Runner delivers multi-terrain prowess, cavernous cargo space and tons of standard safety features.
Toyota is also celebrating a historic run of the popular 4Runner with the release of a 40th Anniversary special edition.
The edition is based on the SR5 Premium trim level. It features several styling changes, including bronze-colored accents on the grille, wheels and side mirrors. The popular SUV also gets a unique front bumper, black roof rack and 40th commemorative badging.
Under the Hood
All 4Runners have a 4.0-liter engine and five-speed automatic transmission mated to a four-wheel drive.
The V6 engine delivers 270 hp and 278 Ib-ft of torque. Low-end torque makes the SUV suitable for summer travel which entails camping in remote locations or exploring rugged terrain.
Torque spread also improves fuel efficiency because the engine operates at lower revolutions per minute while maintaining consistent speed.
Selective modes allow drivers to alternate traction and performance in on-road and off-road driving scenarios. System also reduces the risk of the 2023 4Runner getting stuck in sand or losing control in slick conditions, while increasing its fuel economy on paved roads.
The 40th Anniversary Edition
The SR5 grade carries 1983-inspired tri-colored graphics on the body sides and grille. It is available in White, Midnight Black Metallic and Barcelona Red Metallic.
Inside, the 40th Anniversary Edition is a distinctive black and bronze interior with copper-colored accents on the seats, steering wheel and shift knob. The center console also gets an honorary 40th anniversary imprint.
Other optional features on the limited edition of 4Runner SUVs include a premium sound system, panoramic sunroof and wireless charging pad.
Comfort and Convenience
Standard two-row seating configuration is 47.2 cubic feet of space behind rear seats and 89.7 cubic feet with seats folded down. Small-item storage options include a glovebox, door pockets and 10 cup holders for families to stay hydrated in hot temperatures.
Travelers can keep summer essentials like sunscreen, driving gloves, phone chargers and emergency cash in the center console. An overhead compartment stores sunglasses out of the way.
A sliding rear cargo deck with an underfloor area offers additional cargo space for individuals going on extended summer vacations. It also provides a separate space convenient for storing wet beach items or other messy cargo away from the rest of the cabin area.
The 2023 4Runner has a 5000-pound towing capacity for a midsized camper or boat for summer tides.
All models include an 8-inch touchscreen compatible with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa. Other standard in-cabin functionalities include Bluetooth connectivity, Wi-Fi and four USB ports to ensure devices remain fully charged.

Toyota's Safety Sense—a collection of safeguard technologies function in the background to keep occupants protected on busy summer roads.

- Adaptive Cruise Control
- Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection
- Automatic High Beam Headlights
- Lane Departure Warning
- Automatic Emergency Braking
