Toyota’s 1986 sports car has been redesigned for 2022 under the Gazoo Racing (GR) performance line. The all-new coupe features a fresh interior, exterior styling and host of safety features.
Under the Hood
Redesigned inside and out, the all-new GR86 comes with a bigger 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and an output increase of 228-hp and 184 Ib-ft of torque up from 205-hp and 156 Ib-ft of torque. It is an 18 percent upgrade in horsepower and an 11 percent jump in torque than its predecessor.
Equipped with a rear-wheel drive and 6-speed manual or optional automatic transmission, the GR86 goes 0-60 mph in 6.1 seconds (manual) and 6.6 seconds (automatic).
Toyota’s D-4S dual injection technology was re-tuned for more aggressive throttle input. This system combines direct fuel injection and port-injection technologies.
A direct-injection system provides a cooling effect in the cylinders, which delivers a high 12.5:1 compression ratio for maximum power. Port fuel injectors help maximize combustion efficiency during light- and medium-load conditions.
The intake manifold’s port diameter and length on the 2022 GR86 were optimized to support linear torque and acceleration. Air intake was redesigned to maximize airflow. The fuel system has a new pump design and wider transfer tube for a steady fuel flow while cornering.
To complement GR86’s increased torque, the rear axle has additional reinforcement. The strut stabilizer bar connects directly to the subframe for maximum stability.
Comfort and Convenience
This two-door coupe seats four occupants. The heated front seats are well-cushioned for long drives with plenty of cabin room for taller occupants.
The 2022 GR86 features Toyota’s Smart Key System for both the driver and passenger door. Inside, drivers are presented with a horizontally configured instrument panel for a clean field of view.
A push-button start ignites a boxer-inspired GR-logo animation on its 7-inch Thin Film Transistor, multi-information display. Display content varies based on whether drivers are in Normal, Sport, Snow or Track mode (MT offers Track mode only).
The digital cluster supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, satellite radio and Bluetooth.
Cargo space for the GR86 is 6.2 cubic feet, enough for a duffle bag or carry-on suitcase. Rear seats can be collapsed to stow bulkier items like a golf club bag or extra set of tires.
Complimentary 1-year NASA Membership
Every 2022 GR86 comes with a complimentary one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association. Among the benefits for GR86 owners are one free High Performance Driving Event and discounted admission to NASA-sanctioned events.
Safety
The GR86 comes with adaptive cruise control designed to help maintain a preset distance and lane departure alert, and alert drivers when the car drifts out of its lane.
A pedestrian detection system is integrated with a 360 camera and safety radar sensors which avert imminent collisions.
The Automatic Transmission GR86 includes an active safety system with Pre-Collision Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Lane Departure Warning, Sway Warning, Lead Vehicle Start Alert and High Beam Assist. An anti-theft system with engine immobilizer and alarm are also standard.
All models of the 2022 GR86 come standard with the following safety systems: Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Anti-lock Brake System, Electronic Brake-force Distribution and Brake Assist. Other technologies include Smart Stop Technology, Vehicle Stability Control, Track Mode and Hill Start Assist Control.
Additional safety features include LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) with lower anchors on outboard rear seats and tether anchors on all rear seats and a Tire Pressure Monitor System. Seven airbags are standard on all models, now including a driver’s knee airbag for 2022.
