The 2023 Toyota Prius arrives with a re-engineered powertrain, redesigned cabin space and revamped safety system packages.
The all-new model is fitted with front grille shutters for aerodynamic performance and body panels to whittle down road noise.
Prius is the first Toyota car to wear a new "Beyond Zero" badge—a symbol of the automaker's global effort to achieve carbon neutrality through its vehicles.
"As a company, we set our sights on developing a new Prius for the future and our design and engineering teams really delivered,” said David Christ, vice president at Toyota.
"The weight of the Prius name is heavy—it carries the identity of an entire category of vehicle powertrain. We're confident the all-new 2023 Prius will continue this important legacy."
The 2023 Prius is offered in three grades: LE, XLE and Limited. Standard colors include Cutting Edge, Guardian Gray, Midnight Black Metallic and Reservoir Blue. Available premium paint colors are Supersonic Red and Wind Chill Pearl.
Under the Hood
The 2023 Prius 2.0-liter engine delivers 194 hp output for forward drives and 196 hp for all-wheel drive models. Maximum engine torque is 139 Ib-ft on all models.
Two electric motor generators charge a lithium-ion battery with a 15 percent increment from the previous generation nickel-metal battery. Electronically Controlled Brake system coordinates the regenerative braking force and hydraulic braking system to recover lost electrical energy for fuel conservation.
AWD-equipped LE grades deliver a manufacturer estimate rating of 54 mpg combined, while XLE and Limited models offer 49 mpg combined.
Comfort and Convenience
For added comfort, designers have expanded the surface seating area to disperse body weight and alleviate protracted sitting pressure.
Entry trim comforts include a 12.3-inch JBL premium audio system, fixed glass roof, warmed-up front seats, heated steering wheel, rear power liftback, two cup holders in the center console and six USB ports.
The new Prius also features the latest version of the Toyota Audio Multimedia infotainment system. Display offers dual Bluetooth phone connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility and an optional Wi-Fi Connect access trial for five devices.
Alternative Connected Service Assist allows occupants to access Intelligent Assistant, Cloud Navigation and Destination Assist features.
With Intelligent Assistant, "Hey Toyota" voice-activated prompts are used to ask for directions, locate places of interest, adjust audio controls and alter in-cabin temperature.
Safety
Prius delivers the latest Toyota Safety Sense generation—TSS 3.0. The active safety systems include existing features from prior models and debut enhancements.
- Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist includes a lane recognition upgrade and detection of 3D objects.
- Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection has new system sensors and adds motorcyclist detection capabilities.
- Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control incorporates a fourth distance setting. The system allows the vehicle to detect more than one preceding vehicle or vehicles in opposite lanes.
- Road Sign Assist gets more sign detection competencies like warning signs and pedestrian crossings.
- Lane Tracing Assist is updated with an Emergency Driving Stop System that gauges driver responsiveness and takes control during an emergency.
