Toyota's 2023 RAV4 excites with an electric on-demand all-wheel drive, next-generation infotainment interface and a bundle of active safety upgrades.
The all-new Woodland Edition–Toyota's first hybrid off-road SUV–is a significant addition to the model year. It comes with all-terrain tires for optimal off-roading, raised black roof rails and cross bars for recreational gear and a 120V inverter to power a small fridge during summer weather.
Under the Hood
The 2.5-liter engine is assisted by two electric motors for a combined output of 219 hp. Engine generates 163 Ib-ft of torque, while the electric motors have 89 torque output.
All-wheel drive is standard on the RAV4—one of the electric motors powers the rear wheels, while the second motor and gasoline engine drive the fronts. The 18.1-kWh battery pack has an EPA electric-only driving range of 42 miles.
Full charge with a base 3.3-kWh onboard charger is 12 hours. An optional 6.6.-kWh charger attains a shorter charging span of 2.5 hours via a 240-volt outlet.
Woodland Edition Details
The RAV4 Hybrid Woodland Edition offers a distinctively rugged exterior and premium interior styling with the versatile features as part of the fifth-generation RAV4. A TRD-tuned suspension enhances body control and small-bump isolation to help smooth out trails as well as rough city streets.
Coil springs are tuned for an off-road focus and bump stops maximize compression-direction wheel travel. The twin-tube shocks feature internal rebound springs for optimal roll control and unique valving to help body control over large bumps and dips.
Standard features include Falken Wildpeak AT tires for optimal off-roading, raised black roof rails and cross bars to pack supplies for weekend camping trips. The 120V inverter to power-up an array of compatible household items for a short day trip or an overnight camping excursion.
Other standard features include LED projector-beam headlights and integrated fog lights. The console offers large volume, side-by-side cup holders and an open tray capable of holding small items. An in-dash tray within easy reach of the front passenger can hold electronics, sunglasses and other travel items. The rear cargo area features a reversible cargo floor insert and side nets for storing small items. The 60/40 folding rear seats easily expand the rear cargo area.
Comfort and Convenience
Entry-level features include an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Wi-Fi hotspot, "Hey Toyota” virtual assistant, satellite radio, a six-speaker stereo, Bluetooth and three USB ports.
Premium add-ons are a 10-inch touchscreen, wireless device charging, 11-speaker stereo, 120-volt household-style power outlet and two additional USB ports.
Dual-zone climate control allows passengers to enjoy cool temperatures in the sweltering heat. Rear vents behind the center console ensures the refreshing air conditioning reaches back passengers.
Storage compartments include side-by-side cup holders, open tray for small items and an in-dash tray for electronics, sunglasses and other summer travel must-haves.
Behind rear seats is a cargo area of 37.6 cubic feet which expands to 69.8 cubic feet with seats folded to accommodate extra luggage, camping gear, or adventure bikes.
Safety
Honda's latest driver and passenger front airbag technology is available on all 2023 HR-V Hybrid models. The advanced airbag system is designed to handle lateral collisions that cause a front occupant’s head to rotate severely at high velocity.
The HR-V features standard front occupant knee and rear passenger side impact airbags for the first time.
Toyota's Safety Sense safety features have been revamped to include new onboard, front collision, lane departure and nocturnal functionalities.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid an overall safety score of five out of five stars. It also garnered the highest ratings of five stars in the side crash test and four stars in front crash and rollover appraisals.
