Under the Hood

The gas-powered 2025 Highlander is fitted with a 2.4-liter engine that generates 265 HP and 310 Ib-ft of torque. It is paired to a direct shift 8-speed automatic transmission with front or all-wheel drive options. A standard Stop and Start system allows the engine to shut off when the vehicle stops and instantly restart when the driver’s foot releases from the brake pedal. The feature helps Highlander achieve 22city/29highway/25 combined manufacturer rating.

AWD-equipped Highlander models can tow up to 5,000 pounds and feature Trailer Sway Control for enhanced stability during towing.

Five hybrid grades are equipped with Toyota's Electronic On-Demand AWD system. This system combines a high-efficiency 2.5-liter engine with two electric motor generators, delivering a combined 243 net HP and an estimated 35 combined MPG.

Drivers can select their preferred driving mode from Normal, Eco, Sport, and EV. Normal seamlessly transitions between electric and gasoline power.

Eco mode maximizes fuel and battery efficiency by prioritizing in-vehicle functions like climate control or higher gears at lower speeds. Sport mode boosts throttle response and improves acceleration for highway users or drivers seeking a more thrilling experience.

EV mode allows the 2025 Highlander to operate strictly on electric power over short distances. This mode is well-suited for low-speed commuting and individuals seeking to reduce their carbon footprint. A Predictive Efficient Drive System analyzes driving daily habits for optimal battery use and recharging via regenerative braking.
