2019 4Runner Builds On 35 Years Of 'Wow!'

The Toyota 4Runner turns 35 in 2019, and the SUV enjoys a reputation as a ride that’s ready for anything. Offering a wealth of creature comforts, helpful safety features and innovative technology, the 4Runner is ready for any adventure.

Under the Hood

Powered by a 270-horsepower 4.0-liter V-6, the 2019 4Runner produces 278 pound-feet of torque through its five-speed ECT-i automatic transmission. Dual Independent Variable Valve Timing enables plenty of torque for towing, and the 4Runner includes an integrated tow-hitch receiver and wiring harness on all grades. All 4Runner models can tow a maximum of 5,000 pounds, with a maximum tongue weight of 500 pounds.

Two-wheel drive models offer an Automatic Limited Slip Differential. This piece of the traction control system allows for some wheel slippage to help the vehicle dig out from sand or snow. An available part-time four-wheel drive system relies on Active Traction Control that bolsters off-road capability by distributing drive force to any one wheel in contact with the ground. This means A-TRAC helps maintain traction when it senses wheel slippage occurring on terrain irregularities and slippery patches.

Comfort & Convenience

The 2019 4Runner is built to bring it all with you. Fold-flat second-row seats create a level floor for loading. An available pull-out cargo deck can schlep up to 440 pounds, and also provides seating for tailgating and relaxing at the campsite. The 4Runner also offers two 12V outlets and a 120V outlet for power on the go.

The SR5 and Limited grades offer a third row of seating, coupled with a split 50/50 seat that folds flat. These models also feature air-conditioning with rear seat vents and a pollen filter, as well as a power-sliding liftgate window and backup camera. An Optitron instrument panel lends a touch of high-tech elegance to all grades, and display offers readouts for numerous vehicle functions and fuel economy.

The SR5 Premium comes with SofTex-trimmed seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and heated front seats.

Toyota’s Star Safety system comes standard, a package that includes Vehicle Stability Control with traction control and an Anti-lock Brake System with Electronic Brake-force Distribution. The 4Runner also includes Brake Assist and the Smart Stop Technology (SST) brake-override system.

The SUV includes eight standard airbags, like the TAP (thorax, abdomen, pelvis) front seat-mounted side airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags and all-row Roll-Sensing Side Curtain Airbags.
